Welcome to The Singing Piano:
A Mind–Body–Heart Piano Experience
Finding your unique voice at the piano
The Singing Piano is year-long, immersive, structured mentorship for returning adult pianists who want more than disconnected video tutorials, occasional scattered lessons, or struggling solo, trying to piece music together, one note at a time.
The Singing Piano offers adults a clear musical path designed to build real skills, confidence, understanding, fluency, expression and artistic freedom at the piano through a deeply integrated approach to learning.
At The Singing Piano, music is taught in patterns. Rhythmic patterns, melodic patterns, chordal patterns, that can be seen in the sheet music and on the keyboard.
Music is broken down into the main elements of rhythm, melody and harmony for deep study. Rhythm provides the life of the music, the heartbeat, the dance. Students are taught to count, clap and feel rhythms in multiple ways, until they become recognizable patterns that are easy to read and feel.
second nature they learn to measure distances as they gradually to understand the unique roles of these elements separate from the whole. These elements are absorbed into the mind and body through the senses, before integrating them back together. This breaking down for deep study, then bringing back together brings complete understanding of how music works. When understanding is there, the heart can take over with expression.
naturally through coordinated movement, listening, rhythm, imagination, and artistry.
This is the Mind–Body–Heart Approach.
Learning moves beyond simply “playing the right notes.” Music gradually becomes something that is heard inwardly, felt like a dance within the body, shaped with intention, and expressed with freedom and beauty.
Students develop:
- natural reading fluency
- scales, chords, and harmonic understanding and playing fluency
- rhythmic coordination and pulse
- expressive tone and phrasing
- healthy, ergonomic movement
- musical listening skills
- ability to improvise melodies around changing chords
- overall confidence at the keyboard
The Singing Piano combines traditional musical training with creative exploration.
Students may study Classical repertoire, Jazz/Blues/Popular, free improvisation, one and two handed accompaniment styles to go with singing, lead-sheet and chord chart playing, and arranging and composing.

teaching for success

all skill levels
I enjoy working with adults of all skill levels. I believe that nearly all students can be successful when they are eager to learn, are studying with a capable, enthusiastic teacher and have the support and encouragement of their family.

collaboration
I encourage a relaxed, two-way dialog in lessons where students can ask questions of me in order to better understand best practices of how to learn to play musically on the piano.

fundamentals
All students learn piano music fundamentals in theory, technique, sight reading and playing by ear, so that they will be musically literate and prepared to pursue any musical direction they desire at any time in their lives.

variety in musical genres
Studying different musical styles gives students a more broad, complete picture of the expressive nature and cultural richness of music. This can spark creativity when fusing contrasting elements into one's own musical style.

recorded performances
I invite my students to send me a video recording of their "finished" music at any time. If the recordings are polished enough, containing no more than a few minor errors, with the student's permission, I will download their performances on my website or YouTube Channel for the general public to enjoy. Committing one's music to a recording develops a sense of completion and mastery. Sharing one's music is a great gift to others and develops self-confidence in the performer.

composing songwriting
Some students stretch their musical creativity by learning how to compose their own piano solos and/or learning to sing songs with a simple, effective piano accompaniment. Please let me know if you wish to explore this special area of musical interest!
